The importance of a correct pruning

Durch: Contributor Anbau

Marijuana plants are pruned to increase the production of flowers by different means. One objective of pruning may be to limit the height of the plant, forcing it to grow sideways and to widen. Pruning is used in both interior and exterior cultivations and the technique used depends entirely on your needs. The ideal time for pruning is dependant on the type of pruning you are doing. The type of plant should also be taken into account when deciding whether or not to prune. Autoflowering seeds varieties do not respond as well to pruning as feminized seeds varieties due to the short vegetative period. Here we list some of the most common types of pruning:

Bass or Lollipop pruning

This basically consists of removing the branches and lower leaves of the plant to improve  air circulation and ensure that the plant devotes all its energy to the leaves that remain. If the plant has many low branches during the growth phase, they will not have access to sufficient light  and their maintenance is an energy expenditure for the plant.
Using bonsai scissors, cut  the low branches at the height of the stem, so they will not regrow. This type of pruning should not be done when the plant is in the flowering phase. If the leaves begin to turn yellow, they should not be pruned, but left until they dry completely or fall on their own.

Apical pruning (Topping)

This is possibly the most popular type of pruning and is the technique that allows controlling the height of the plant. In this case the upper apex of the plant is cut to prevent it from growing upwards and force it to develop lower branches. The branches will become stronger, have several points and you will get more buds. Cutting the upper apex of the plant can be done by hand, although it is best to do it with cleaned and disinfected  bonsai or curved scissors.

Super cropping

This form of pruning is used on on many different types of plants as well as marijuana plants. It consists of folding or squashing the branches without breaking them. The advantages of this are twofold. Firstly its allows the bent branch to take better advantage of the light and allows the light to reach the buds that remain in the lower part of the plant. Secondly, it causes the plant to work to repair the wound and produce more cannabinoid-rich resin and compact female flowers.

With this type of pruning the limitations are minor, and it can be done in almost any phase, except in advanced flowering, when the flowers already have a considerable size. It is essential to be careful not to break the branch.

FIM: This is very similar to apical pruning, but just the upper apex is cut, taking care to leave a small part of the bud. This main apex then develops several shoots on the same stem from which several flowers will then form.

RIB: This is not pruning as such, but a method of burning the upper pistils of the buds in formation. These burns produce a mitosis in the cells as the flower regenerates causing it to reach a much larger size than it would be in its initial state. Much care must be taken when burning the upper pistils of the bud in formation, because if burned excessively, the bud will not be able to recover. The technique itself is not highly recommended; a high level of precision is required and it is easy to get wrong.
